Fleischer Residence
Hanover, New Hampshire

Status: Completed Spring 2003.

This neighborhood home started its life as a small garrison too small for its new owners needs, so Smith and Vansant began redesign in early 2000. Special attention was paid throughout the design process to bringing natural light into the house through the day and in all seasons by fenestration and placement of a central light core that houses the stair.

The main floor is defined by changes in ceiling plane, rather than by enclosure of the spaces. This allows for unimpeded flow of traffic and light.

The top floor, which is entirely new construction, has a four foot knee-wall. Vaulting the spaces upstairs, the children's and master bed and bathrooms, and using the lower spaces along the knee-wall for storage allows for comfortable head heights.
