Status: Completed Summer 2003.
The goal of this project was to transform an attic of an 18th century house, Old School Farm, into a master bedroom suite while keeping the exposed rafters and beams of the original. The existing windows were kept and re-used when new larger, more energy efficient windows and small gable dormers were added to bring more light into the vaulted space.
The original floorboards were taken up, and refinished when a new subfloor was installed beneath them. The original roof sheathing became the ceiling material for the space when the roof structure was repaired and updated to provide better insulation against the cold New England winters.
An expansive master bath was added, the soaking tub taking the spotlight in a platform in one of the new dormers, as well as a sitting area with built-in bookcases and a window seat in another new dormer.
